DESCRIPTION:Taalam (Rhythm) is a joyous exploration of what happens when the South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam meets the African-American art of tap dance. The show celebrates the euphoria that occurs from cross-cultural exchange, while also playfully highlighting the humorous missteps that occur when experiments encounter language barriers. Written in two parts, the show travels from the ancient stages of India to the improvisational jams of Harlem. At each stop along the way, Taalam (Rhythym) creates a polyrhythm between the high-pitched bells of Bharatanatyam and base-filled tones of tap dance. In doing so, it creates an exhilarating celebration of the immigrant experience, champions the universal power of rhythm, and provides a powerful visual metaphor for the melting pot and the transformative power of union.
